(Houston) - The community is invited to enjoy a celebration of Hispanic culture at the Catrin & Catrina Competition on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at Talento Bilingue de Houston (TBH) located at 333 S. Jensen Dr., Houston, Texas 77003. The sponsors for the evening are Que Onda Magazine, Telemundo, and Goya Foods.

All Catrin and Catrina contestants will be judged based upon makeup, attire, and accessories. Contestants must come to TBH already dressed for the competition. The judges will consist of various community leaders.

“We are excited about showcasing the beautiful costumes and teaching others about our history and culture. The winner of this competition will be featured at the Mariachi Festival at the Wortham Theater, which will be held on August 23-25, 2024”, says Ben Mendez, Executive Director of Mariachi Festival. “Our community will support events that celebrate our culture. This event will be a kickoff for other events celebrating the Mariachi Festival.”

The original Catrina was drawn by Mexican national Jose Guadalupe Posada in 1910. It depicted a skeleton dressed up wearing a fancy European feathered hat. In 1948, Diego Rivera painted a mural which further popularized Catrinas and their elegant dresses and beautiful makeup. Since then, La Catrina has become a festive symbol of El Dia de los Muertos, which is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd in Mexico. On this day, families gather to celebrate and honor those that have passed onto the afterlife.
